Requirements for configuring UPS power supply in data centers (How to configure UPS power supply for server rooms?)

In the electrical system of a data center, UPS power supply (AC or DC) is a critical equipment that ensures high-quality, continuity, and availability of power supply. Without UPS power supply, the availability of IT applications in a data center is essentially not guaranteed.

1. Input voltage: A wide input voltage range is required to meet the requirements of the power grid. The input voltage range should be able to reach -30% to +15% of the rated input voltage, which represents the current high level of technology.

2. Power supply reliability: Power supply reliability is related to disciplines such as power electronics and materials. The improvement in average time between failures of individual units is limited by the theories and semiconductor materials in relevant disciplines. Currently, it is difficult to make breakthroughs, and the technology is considered mature. Redundancy technology is the main way to improve reliability in UPS power supply systems.

3. Scalability: Considering the load is for current needs, scalability focuses on the future. To ensure that the power of the system can grow along with the actual demand, scalability needs to be carefully considered during UPS procurement. Through analysis, the integration characteristics of modular UPS systems can significantly improve system reliability and availability.

4. Efficiency utilization: The actual efficiency depends on the load. When the load is 50%, the overall efficiency should be no less than 70%; when the load is 60%, the overall efficiency should be no less than 80%. In traditional tower-type UPS systems with 1+1 redundancy, the load of each device will be less than or equal to 50%, but the efficiency is less than or equal to 60%, which indicates low energy consumption. In a modular UPS system operating normally, the power capacity can be configured according to the actual load, with 2 to 4 redundant power modules, which is both convenient and efficient.

5. Space occupation: The system occupies valuable floor space in the data center, so it is important to ensure that the chosen configuration does not require additional space in your facility.

6. Modularity: If you anticipate growth in your IT requirements, a modular approach should be considered. "Future-proofing" by purchasing more equipment than you currently need will result in higher capital expenditure, storage space, and potential operating costs. It allows you to add infrastructure when needed, avoiding the situation where previous facilities become obsolete after demand increases.

The UPS power infrastructure in server rooms is crucial for the normal operation of data center equipment. There are various UPS configurations available, each with its advantages and limitations. Only by fully understanding the company's availability requirements, risk tolerance, and budget range, can a suitable design solution be selected.

1. First, determine the power range and select a rack-mounted UPS power supply that matches the equipment power to create a configuration plan. The longer the required delay time, the larger the capacity or quantity of the battery group.

2. Users should choose rack-mounted UPS systems based on their goals, applications, and functional requirements.

3. Space: Rack-mounted UPS systems occupy valuable floor space in data centers, so make sure the chosen configuration does not require additional space in your facility. Nowadays, every inch of land in server rooms is valuable, so the size of the UPS is particularly important.

4. Redundancy: If availability is a key consideration in the design, redundancy is necessary. Adding redundant UPS units can avoid single point failures and improve the reliability of the power system.

5. Ease of maintenance is also a factor in selecting UPS models. It is normal for rack-mounted UPS power supplies to experience faults. When selecting a model, the convenience of maintenance should not be underestimated, as it can affect the ease of maintenance during use.
